
Southwest employees devastated as airline that treated staff 'like family' breaks 'sacrosanct' rule
Employees of Southwest Airlines who for decades have been accustomed to a family-like workplace were left blindsided and heartbroken last month when the company laid off 15 percent of its corporate workforce. From 1971 until this year, Southwest employees fully believed their company would take care of them no matter how tough times got. That was largely because co-founder Herb Kelleher, who stepped down as chairman in 2008 and died in 2019, instilled a unique corporate culture that valued respect among workers at all levels.
