A shooting at an elementary school in Bend, Ore., left three students and a teacher dead and two others wounded.

The shooting was reported at Silver Rail Elementary School at about 1 p.m. PT on Thursday, Oct. 15, authorities said.

Bend police Chief Mike Krantz said at a press conference that the three students killed were 5, 8 and 11 years old.

According to The Source, a local outlet, Thursday was picture day at the school.

Angela Nuchols, a parent of a student, told the outlet that the school was “crawling with police officers from all over the county.”

“You’ve got guys in tactical gear, rifles,” she said. “You’re just scared to death wondering, is your child okay? You don’t know.”

The Source reported that Nuchols was reunited with her daughter after a few hours.

Krantz said the suspected gunman was a 16-year-old male who was killed by a community member who saw him enter the school and followed him.

Authorities have not yet said if the gunman, a Bend resident, had any connection to the school.

The school district has since canceled all classes, events and athletic activities on Friday, Oct. 16, per the district’s Facebook page.

“Today an unthinkable tragedy happened at Silver Rail Elementary School,” Bend-La Pine Superintendent Steven Cook said at a press conference. “No community should have to do what we are doing right now.”

Krantz said authorities will remain at the school for the next few days.
