An 18-year-old man has been taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a University of Colorado-Boulder student and the injuring of another over the weekend.

Omar Perez was arrested on charges of first-degree murder, first-degree assault and attempted first-degree murder, according to a Boulder Police Department news release.

According to authorities, a sibling of Perez’s identified the teen from photos that were circulated after the shooting, the Denver Gazette reported.

The shooting of the two University of Colorado-Boulder students occurred on Saturday, Oct. 31 at a home in the University Hill Neighborhood near campus.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting just before 11:30 p.m. at the home in the 700 block of Marine Street.

At the scene, officers found two students suffering from gunshot wounds, per the news release. Both of the students were taken to the hospital but “one of the victims died of his injuries early Sunday, Nov. 1,” police said.

Boulder County Coroner identified Luca Hanlon, 19, as the student killed in the shooting, Denver 7 reported.

According to police, officers were called to the same residence earlier that evening about a noise complaint involving a large party. Officers cited the people living there for hosting a nuisance party.

Police said partygoers dispersed and “a smaller group remained inside the home,” according to the release.

“Detectives believe a group of individuals later attempted to force their way into the house,” the release states. “Shortly after that scuffle, shots were fired inside the home, striking two victims. The suspects then fled the scene.”

Police said “additional charges are possible for other individuals involved in this incident,” but detectives “believe this suspect is the only shooter.”

According to the release, Perez is not a University of Colorado student.

The other shooting victim remains hospitalized.

“Everyone in our community deserves to feel safe and while I hope this arrest restores some measure of safety, I know it will never bring back the life of this young man or undo all the trauma victims have gone through,” Boulder Police Chief Steve Redfearn said.
