Former French minister Lang summoned over Epstein links, source says

By Gianluca Lo Nostro

PARIS, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Pressure rose on Friday on former French culture minister Jack Lang to resign as president of the Arab World Institute over his ties to late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, after the foreign ministry summoned him to discuss the matter.

Lang said earlier ‌this week he had been unaware of Epstein's 2008 sex-offence conviction when they met in around 2012, describing the financier as an acquaintance ‌interested in art and cinema introduced to him by U.S. film-maker Woody Allen.

The 86-year-old former minister, head of the Arab World Institute since 2013, has not been accused of wrongdoing. Lang told BFMTV on Wednesday that Epstein was not a friend, that he knew little about the convicted sex offender, but had found him to be "passionate about art, culture and cinema."

But files released by the U.S. Department ‌of Justice last week raise questions about Lang's characterisation of his relationship with Epstein.

They show Epstein and Lang corresponding intermittently between 2012 and the financier's 2019 death by suicide in ‍jail.

In an email sent by Lang to Epstein on April 7, 2017, nearly a decade after the financier was convicted of soliciting prostitution from an underage girl, he thanked Epstein for a "splendid time" the previous day.

"Your friendship, the amazing pl=ne (sic)m and your extraordinary generosity really touched us," Lang wrote.

Lang, who served multiple terms as culture and education minister between 1981 and ‌2002, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

LANG URGED TO 'THINK ABOUT THE INSTITUTION'

A source close to President Emmanuel Macron said the presidency and prime minister's office had asked relevant ministers to summon Lang and encourage him to "think about the institution." The foreign ministry said it had summoned Lang to a meeting on Sunday.

The Arab World Institute is a cultural and research institution that promotes understanding of the Arab world and is located in Paris on the banks of the Seine river.

Lang's name appears over 600 times in the Epstein files, according to a Reuters review of the documents.

"I fear nothing, and I am clean as a whistle," Lang told French radio RTL on Wednesday.

The files dump has heightened scrutiny of Epstein's global connections with public figures, including Britain's ‍Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles, and Peter Mandelson, the former UK ambassador to the United States.

On Monday, Lang's daughter Caroline resigned as head of France's Independent Production Union after her own links to Epstein surfaced.

Both father and daughter deny wrongdoing, with Caroline telling BFMTV on Thursday she only knew about Epstein's 2008 conviction after he told her to look ‌him up on Google in 2014.

Charli XCX Is a Bride Again, but There’s a Catch

Charli XCX Is a Bride Again, but There's a Catch

Charli XCXbecame a bride and hit the carpet again, but it was all for the cameras. The "Brat" hitmaker stepped out in a bridal-coded look for the Wuthering Heights rollout. It read like a wedding moment, not a wedding announcement. The pop star was doing method dressing for a movie premiere. She is part of the project as the musician behind the film's original music.

Charli XCX turns bride again — for 'Wuthering Heights' red carpet, not the aisle in Brat style twist

According toVogue's reportdated February 5, 2026, Charli XCX's styling went full bridal couture in Wuthering Heights' London premiere. She wore a pale pink Erdem gown from the brand's fall 2026 collection. It featured crystal embroidery, an explosive tulle skirt, and a matching pink tulle veil. Still, the bridal direction was positioned as a nod to a formal wedding thread in the plot.

Wuthering Heights stars Margot Robbie as Cathy andJacob Elordias Heathcliffe, with supporting roles from Hong Chau, Shazad Latif, Alison Oliver, Martin Clunes, and Owen Cooper. It's Emerald Fennell's new adaptation of Emily Brontë's 1847 gothic novel, centered on Cathy and Heathcliff's intense, destructive romance. The film is set to release in cinemas on February 13, 2026.

Meanwhile, Charli XCX's fashion run has stayed consistent across stops and settings. At the Hollywood premiere last month, she wore a sculptural beige Vivienne Westwood look. That piece centered on a dimensional, bustle-like waistline shape.

Then, for a photo call, she shifted into black lace. That outfit paired a vintage John Galliano lace top from 2003 with a Saint Laurent skirt. However, the Erdem moment pushed the theme furthest, while staying anchored to the film.

At the same time, Charli's calendar has not been limited to one rollout. Vogue noted she has also been promoting her mockumentary, The Moment, during this stretch. Even so, the red carpet choices have tracked with the gothic-romance mood she is selling.

  • Prince Joachim's wife clarified whether her family will continue living in the U.S., where they have resided since 2023

  • Queen Margrethe stripped the royal titles of her son Joachim's kids in a shocking move three years ago

Princess Marieof Denmark has clarified her family's future plans about moving back to their home country after her children'sroyal titles were shockingly stripped.

On Feb. 5, Princess Marie revealed that she,Prince Joachimand their two children, Count Henrik, 16, and Countess Athena, 14, will move back to Denmark in 2027, relocating from the U.S., where they have lived since 2023.

Princess Marie made the revelation in a new interview with Danish outletBILLED-BLADET, published on the eve of her 50th birthday on Feb. 6. She confirmed to the paper that she, her husband and their kids will continue living in Washington, D.C. until Joachim's contract as defense industry attaché expires in August 2027.

"The most important thing for me and my family are the years that lie ahead of us. Right now, as you know, we are staying in the U.S. for another year and a half. Then the children can finish their schooling," Marie toldBILLED-BLADETin an interview at Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen.

"Henrik will finish high school, he will be 18, and then we will move back. Athena will start high school here in Denmark. I think Henrik will want to continue his studies right away, but we will have to see. He loves chemistry, physics and mathematics. But he has to work hard," the royal mom continued.

Princess Marie added that she was "looking forward to getting back to my work and my patronages. And getting back to Denmark," and that her family was too.

"We are really looking forward to it. It has been really exciting to be out of the country and be able to support Denmark abroad," she said about their stint in the U.S.

Prince Joachim is the second son ofQueen Margretheand the father of four children. Joachim, 56, shares his two eldest sons, Count Nikolai, 26, and Count Felix, 23, with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg. They divorced in 2005, and Joachim married Marie in 2008. The couple went on to welcome two children, Henrik and Athena.

In September 2022, Queen Margrethe announced plans to remove Joachim's children's prince and princess titles and "His/Her Highness" stylings they had held since birth. She later described the decision as "necessary future-proofing of the monarchy," and the change took effect on Jan. 1, 2023.

Nikolai, Felix, Henrik and Athena retained their places in the line of succession to the throne and took on the lower-ranking titles of His Excellency Count of Monpezat or Her Excellency Countess of Monpezat. The sudden decision to strip their styling was criticized, and Joachimsaid they felt blindsided. However, he later seemed tosoften his stance and reflected, "We've moved on."

Queen Margrethe did not strip the titles of the children of her firstborn son, who is now known asKing Frederik. Queen Margrethe, 85,abdicated in January 2024, and Frederik became the new sovereign, making his eldest son the newCrown Prince Christian.

Prince Joachim, Princess Marie, Count Henrik and Count Athena moved to Washington in the summer of 2023, relocating from Paris, where they had lived since 2020. Princess Marie was born and raised in Paris, and her family's U.S. move marked a fresh start after Henrik and Athena's Danish royal titles were removed.

Count Nikolai and Count Felix did not join their family in America when Prince Joachim took on a three-year job with the Danish Embassy under the Ministry of Defense.

Like Joachim and Marie, who have traveled back for a few royal events since their U.S. move, Nikolai and Felix continued supporting the crown by attending some royal functions, such as Queen Margrethe's 85th birthday celebrations in April 2025.

In May, King Frederikbestowed his two elder nephews with the Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog, awarding them with an honor interpreted as an olive branch after their princely titles were taken.

The appointment welcomed Nikolai and Felix into an elite order of chivalry recognizing outstanding individuals for their service or contributions to Denmark.
