Flood risk continues in Hawaii as North Shore residents return to destroyed homes

Flood risk continues in Hawaii as North Shore residents return to destroyed homes

The already battered Hawaiian islands may face more flooding today, with aflood watch still in effectfor the Big Island and aflood advisory in Mauiissued through Monday afternoon.

NBC Universal

The devastating "kona low," the name for seasonal Hawaiian cyclones, continues to move across the state after causing widespread destruction in Oahu and Maui over the weekend. Possible heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms now threaten the Big Island with flooding, as an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain may come down over already saturated ground.

Several mountain locations have seen 20 to 40 inches of rain across the island chain during what has become Hawaii's heaviest rainstorm in 20 years.

Evacuation warnings were lifted for most of the zones in Maui on Sunday, after cities such as Lahaina and Kahului received a year's worth of rain in just a few days. Kahului has already experienced its wettest month on record with nearly 20 inches of rain.

Residents of Oahu's North Shore were told to flee Saturday, with evacuation orders issued for 5,500 people living in the area known for its big-wave surfing community.Officials warnedthat the aging Wahiawa dam was "at risk of imminent failure," a possibility that the state has said could result in "probable loss of human life."

Floodwaters, which were so strong that locals described them as having currents, flowed through the streets of Oahu, lifting homes and totaling cars. Many North Shore residents left the area Saturday morning, returning in the afternoon to mud-caked houses with some finding their homes completely swept away by flooding.

Olivia Vergiels, a Haleiwa resident, returned to her home to find her floor and belongings covered in thick mud. "My house is totally unlivable right now," Vergiels told NBC News.

Cleanup efforts were underway as locals came together to help displaced families returning to destroyed homes. Mac Burton, who lives in Wailua Beach, went out into the streets of the North Shore community Sunday to help his neighbors.

Cleanup, he said, is going to take months. "Anything that was, you know, 4 feet or below, it is just completely wiped out," he said.

Burton said that many homes still have standing water in them and that even when the water level goes down, they're left with "a ton of mud." Wood homes that are still standing will face mold and water damage, he said.

"Everyone's kind of in the street, just shoveling out mud and pulling out soaking debris and doing whatever they can to kind of start drying things out," he said. "But we're still without power here, so it's making some of those efforts a little more difficult."

Burton was awake when the flooding began early Saturday. As he watched the water level rise in the street, he began to wake up his neighbors. "I was knocking on doors and just kind of yelling, like, 'Hey, I think everyone should wake up. This is kind of a big deal,'" he said.

Gov. Josh Green said the cost of the storm could top $1 billion, including damage to airports, schools, roads, homes and a Maui hospital in Kula.

The infrastructure of Oahu's North Shore has been particularly hit hard. A boil-water notice remains in effect from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply for water users on the North Shore, urging them to boil tap water due to a risk of harmful bacteria.

Burton called this weekend's flooding a "wake-up call" for the community and state government. "Mama nature is mad right now," he said.

"This was the worst storm they've had in two decades. But, you know, it's possible that these kind of storms are going to be more frequent in the future," he continued.

Voice of America journalists allege Trump wants to make outlet a propaganda source

Voice of America journalists allege Trump wants to make outlet a propaganda source

Some journalists at Voice of America charged in a lawsuit Monday that the Trump administration — while largely shutting down the government-run outlet that provides news around the world — has turned what remains into a voice for propaganda.

Associated Press

The lawsuit alleges that VOA transmissions to populations in Iran, China, North Korea and to Kurdish populations are not being run as objective news sources, as required by law. Instead, they parrot White House talking points and suppress news that the administration wishes to downplay, according to the lawsuit, filed Monday with the U.S. District Court in Washington.

In response, the U.S. Agency for Global Media, which runs the Voice of America, said that taxpayer money must support broadcasting that reflects U.S. policy and the interests of the American people.

The latest dispute reflects differing views between journalists and President Donald Trump's administration, which has promoted friendly outlets that rarely offer more than gentle questioning —most notablyat the Pentagon.

A federal judge last weekordered hundredsof VOA journalists who had been placed on paid leave for the past year be put back to work, saying Trump's pick to run the USAGM, Kari Lake, exceeded her authority. The administration isappealing that ruling.

Voice of America, which has beamed its broadcasts across the world since World War II, was designed to showcase freedom of the press to countries where there is no such tradition. But instead of operating that way, VOA journalists Barry Newhouse, Ayesha Tanzeem, Dong Hyuk Lee and Ksenia Turkova say Trump loyalists have been put in place to direct what is reported on the few VOA transmissions that remain.

For example, coverage of the Iran war sent into that country has not included any news of death tolls from U.S. air strikes or the perspectives of political and world leaders outside of the administration, while thebombing of an elementary schoolwas "barely mentioned," the lawsuit said. The Lake-appointed official overseeing Persian, Kurdish and Afghan services has said all guest appearances on broadcasts must be approved by him, it said.

"Through VOA's journalism, those living in authoritarian societies get a taste of democracy," the plaintiffs said in a statement. "Without editorial integrity, VOA will be no different than government mouthpieces our audiences already hear in their own country."

The administration has questioned whether taxpayers should foot the bill for transmission of opinions that go against American interests. Lake, incongressional testimonylast year, suggested the traditional firewall between the government and journalists at agencies like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty be eliminated. "We should be able to have control over what kind of content goes out," she said. "It should be in alignment with our foreign policy."

The Agency for Global Media "is responsible for oversight of its networks, including Voice of America, and for ensuring compliance with the VOA charter, which requires authoritative, accurate journalism that is reflective of and clearly presents U.S. policies," the agency said in a statement Monday.

The VOA journalists were supported in their lawsuit Monday by the organizations PEN America and Reporters Without Borders.

'Reacher' Star Alan Ritchson Allegedly Caught on Camera in Fight With Neighbor

Authorities are allegedly investigating an incident involvingReacherstarAlan Ritchsonand a neighbor of his in Tennessee following a physical altercation between the pair.

TV Insider Alan Ritchson

On Sunday (March 22),TMZ released footagerecorded from the window of another neighbor, which seemingly shows Ritchson hitting a man and knocking him to the ground. Two children, who are allegedly the actor's kids, appear nearby on motorbikes.

The neighbor, Ronnie Taylor, spoke to TMZ, claiming that the confrontation started on Saturday (March 21) when Ritchson drove his dirt bike at "excessive speed" through the neighborhood. After Ritchson revved his bike, Taylor said he flipped the actor the bird, and Ritchson returned the gesture.

Taylor claimed that Ritchson returned to the area on Sunday around midday, this time riding on a motorbike with his two kids on their own motorbikes. He said he told Ritchson, "Can you f****** stop this, please," which is when the situation escalated.

He alleged that theTitansstar punched him in the face and kicked him to the ground while repeatedly hitting his head. Ritchson then reportedly fell off his bike, got back up, and tried to run Taylor off.

Taylor reported the incident to the police, saying the alleged assault left him with swelling and bruises. He said he did not go to the hospital.

Law enforcement sources told TMZ that an investigation into the incident is ongoing. No arrests have been made.

Social media users reacted to the video, with some calling for Ritchson to be charged, while others wanted more context before making a judgment.

"I hope he gets the law thrown at him..," wrote one X user.

"We need the full story, because this moment looks like it was pulled straight out of the show. What actually pushed him to do that?" said another.

"Being a public figure doesn't excuse this. If the allegations are accurate, that's unacceptable behaviour especially over something so minor and in front of kids," another added.

Another wrote, "We need context to what actually happened here before passing judgement."

"Well, I guess it's payday for the neigbor. This is a clear case of assault, hitting a man repeatedly while he is already on the ground and posing no threat. I hope the neighbor presses charges," said one user.

"Let's hear both sides of the story," wrote another.

2 pilots dead after Air Canada plane collides with truck at LaGuardia airport

2 pilots dead after Air Canada plane collides with truck at LaGuardia airport

Two pilots were killed and dozens were injured on Sunday night after an arriving planecollidedwith a fire truck on a runway at New York's LaGuardia Airport.

NBC Universal

The incident involved Air Canada Flight 8646, which had just landed with 72 passengers and 4 crew members, and a Port Authority fire-rescue vehicle responding to a separate issue on another flight. Air traffic control audio recordings appeared to show a controller had cleared the vehicle to cross the runway before telling it to stop.

"I messed up," one air traffic controller is heard saying on the recording.

Follow live updates here.

Transport Secretary Sean Duffysaid Monday he is headedto the New York airport and that the Federal Aviation Administration, National Transportation Safety Board and the Port Authority are investigating.

Duffy told NBC News that the FAA is looking into whether ATC staffing was an issue in the incident.

Of those aboard, 41 people were treated for injuries at local hospitals, some of them seriously, Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia told a news conference early Monday. So far, 32 have been released from hospitals.

Two of the injured, a sergeant and an officer, have broken limbs and are in stable condition, according to preliminary information two sources with knowledge of the investigation told NBC News. Garcia said the two officers had non-life-threatening injuries.

Sources said the plane, a Jazz Aviation flight operating on behalf of Air Canada, was at the end of landing and going about 30 mph when the collision occurred at around 11:40 p.m.

Garcia said the truck was responding to an unrelated odor report on a United flight.

In the air traffic controller audio recording, the controller said the flight attendants on the United flight were feeling ill due to the odor. In another recording, a controller is heard requesting permission to cross the runway.

Moments later, a controller repeatedly tells "Truck 1" to stop.

A video postedon social media shows a passenger jet on the runway with its cockpit high and the underside of its forward fuselage mangled.

The collision at LaGuardia's Runway 4 is the latest to hit a beleaguered aviation industry. The New York City airport will remain closed until at least 2 p.m. Monday.

"Heartbreaking news out of LaGuardia this morning," New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a Monday post onX, confirming the number of deaths and injuries."Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and everyone affected."

Transport disruption in the region also worsened on Monday after a brief ground stop was issued at Newark International Airport in New Jersey following an FAA tower evacuation due to smoke in an elevator.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane was a Bombardier CRJ-900 twin-jet aircraft flown by Air Canada Express, also known as Jazz Aviation, from Montreal.

NTSB sent a "go team" to the collision scene and will later send an investigative team.

Families were directed to Air Canada to find other family members who may have separated as the aircraft was evacuated — an unaccompanied minor was reunited with their family, Garcia said.

The NYPD told people to avoid the area around LaGuardia and to expect local disruptions, as all streets and airport exits are also closed.
