Israel lifts restrictions at holy sites in Jerusalem after fragile ceasefire announced

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Worshippers were able to pray again at Jerusalem's holy sites Thursday after Israel lifted restrictions it imposed on large public gatherings throughout the war with Iran nearly six weeks ago.

Israel Iran War

Jerusalem’s police said on Wednesday that they would liftrestrictions on all holy sitesand deploy hundreds of officers and volunteers in the city.

Access had been prohibited altogether, or restricted to a few dozen faithful at a time, at Christian, Jewish and Muslim sites during the now-paused conflict, when missile attacks from Iran often sent Jerusalem residents into shelters.

The restrictions subduedLent,PassoverandRamadancelebrations for many in some of the holiest sites for adherents of Christianity, Islam and Judaism.

The Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, closed for much of the holy month of Ramadan and the Eid al-Fitr holiday, reopened with dawn prayer Thursday, according to Jerusalem’s Islamic Waqf, the Jordanian religious authority that administers the compound. At the adjacent Western Wall in the Old City — the holiest site in the world where Jews can pray — dozens of men and women were seen bowing their heads in prayer.

The lifting of the restrictions comes just in time for Orthodox Christians, who celebrate Easter on Sunday, a week after Catholic and Protestant observances and before the centuries-old ceremony known as the Holy Fire that is associated with it.

On Saturday, thousands of Christians will gather in the cavernous Church of the Holy Sepulchre holding unlit candles as they pack into thesprawling 12th-century basilicabuilt on the site where, according to tradition, Jesus was crucified and buried. The Greek patriarch will light candles and then the flame is passed from one candle to the next.

The restrictions sparked backlash last month when Israeli police prevented Catholic leaders from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulchre to celebrate a private Mass on the Christian holiday of Palm Sunday for the first time in centuries. That set off a wave of criticism from the United States and others.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there was no “malicious intent” and thatCardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballawas prevented from accessing the church because of safety concerns. He was later allowed to enter on Easter Sunday.

On Thursday, worshippers reveled as they entered Al-Aqsa for the first time in weeks.

“It is as if human beings are reborn,” said Mohammed Al-Qassas. Being unable to pray during this period is like “feeling hungry all the time,” he said.

“It’s impossible to describe this feeling ... It was one of the most happiest moments in my life," said Biljana Vaslic, a tourist from Serbia who, until now, hadn't been able to enter the church.

Still, others accused Israel of using the war as an excuse to restrict access. "This is a grace from God after 40 days of using the war as a pretext, but God has granted steadfastness in this mosque," said Omar al-Kiswani, director of the mosque.

Even before the war, there were already heightened restrictions on people being able to access Al-Aqsa.

During Ramadan prayers on Friday in early February, Israel restricted the number of Palestinians allowed to enter from the West Bank to 10,000, and only allowed men over 55 and women over 50 as well as children up to 12. It has imposed similar restrictions in the past, citing security concerns.

'Big surprise': Jimmy Kimmel addressesMelania Trump's comments on Epstein

Kimmel called Melania Trump's address "a big surprise," joking that she "emerged from the rubble of theEast Wing" to deliver her comments about Epstein.

"She brushed the drywall off her business suit and delivered a doozy of a prepared statement demanding that we stop talking about something no one was talking about," Kimmel said.

Kimmel also responded to Melania Trump's assertion that "numerous fake images and statements about Epstein and me have been calculating on social media for years now."

The host referencedPresident Trump'salleged sexual encounter with adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

"This is the same speech he gave her after Stormy Daniels. She's just regurgitating it," Kimmel said. "But the bigger question is, what images have been calculating around social media? What is she talking about? And I haven't seen any images."

NEED TO KNOW

  • The pageant queen had been diagnosed with a “rare and aggressive gastric cancer” in July, according to a GoFundMe

  • “Her ambition, grace, tenacity and talent will be deeply missed,” read a statement shared by her alma mater

Carrie Everett, a former Miss North Carolina, died on April 5, her family shared. She was 22.

“We are heartbroken to share that last night, the beautiful nightingale, Helen Carrie Everett, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer,” wrote her family in an update to aGoFundMe. “The cries of her heart became songs that stirred the spirits of everyone who had the pleasure of hearing her sing.”

Her family previously shared on a GoFundMe last year that Everett started noticing symptoms of “intense bloating and coughing” in July, shortly after serving for a year as Miss North Carolina. When she first visited doctors, she was told she had pneumonia, but doctors later found cancer markers on July 29 after blood work and scans.

“Some days later, she started coughing up blood, was rushed to the hospital, and admitted,” the post continued. “A biopsy was done, and she was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive gastric cancer, metastatic signet ring cell carcinoma.”

When the GoFundMe was first created, Everett was undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments, but on March 21, her family shared the unfortunate update that treatments weren’t “working.”

Still, her family thanked those who had contributed for their support throughout the journey.

“Thank you all so much for your generous donations and prayers!” they penned. “They really have helped ensure that Carrie has received all the care that she needs. Sabrina Carpenter recruits Susan Sarandon and Will Ferrell for splashy, Hollywood-themed Coachella headlining set

Sabrina Carpentertransformed Indio, Calif., into "SabrinaWood" for her showstoppingCoachella 2026headlining set Friday night.

The Old Hollywood–themed performance boasted surprise cameos fromSusan Sarandon,Will Ferrell,Samuel L. Jackson, andSam Elliott, and included cinematic references to Alfred Hitchcock,The Wizard of Oz… andSnakes on a Plane?

Carpenter opened the set with a black-and-white short film in which she played what looked like a "Hitchcock Blonde," driving down a lone highway at night in a 1950s classic car as she sang along to Kool & the Gang’s "Hollywood Swinging."

In a scene straight out ofPsycho, police lights emerged in the rearview, and when she pulled over a mysterious, creepy officer portrayed byLandmanstar Elliott proceeded to grill her.

The "Manchild" singer managed to get back on the road, eventually arriving at a drive-in that was revealed to be Coachella.  As she emerged from the car, the black-and-white scene turned to Technicolor, seemingly alluding to 1939'sThe Wizard of Oz,but her yellow brick road to the stage resembled the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

HerMan's Best Friendsingle "House Tour" kicked off the show, with the singer decked out in a red glittery mini, perhaps a nod to Dorothy’s ruby slippers.

Sarandon nearly stole the show with her cameo (or at least brought it to a screeching halt) when she delivered a dramatic monologue in the middle of Carpenter's set, playing an older version of the singer. Hearkening back to the opening sequence, the 77-year-old actress sat in a classic car at a drive-in and reflected on "what it was like to be a star" in her glory days. The nearly seven-minute soliloquy was eventually interrupted by a carhop portrayed by Carpenter's formerGirl Meets Worldcostar Corey Fogelmanis, who popped up to give her the check and close her out before he ended his shift.

So what's the connection between Sarandon and Carpenter? The singer's 2025 video for "Tears" has drawncomparisonstoTheRocky Horror Picture Show, the 1975 musical comedy starring Sarandon and Tim Curry, so it could have all started there.

Several songs later, as Carpenter concluded "Bad Chem," the stage's power short-circuited, requiring a quick repair from the festival's on-call electrician: none other than Will Ferrell. The comedian didn't seem too thrilled about the gig, as he griped to the crowd, because he thought he was working Stagecoach, which will actually take place the weekend after Coachella wraps.

Ferrell got the lights working again just in time for Carpenter's performance of "Juno," a song inspired by the 2007 comedy about an unplanned teen pregnancy. However, she seemed to reference a different funny film toward the end of it —Snakes on a Plane, which features Jackson'siconic line, "I have had it with these motherf---ing snakes on this motherf---ing plane!"

"Hello, Coachella, this is your spiritual guide," said the actor in a voice-over. "I'm here to take you motherf---ers on this journey to relaxation." After a few breathing exercises, he told Carpenter, echoing thatSnakesline, "Now, Sabrina, finish the motherf---ing song."

Earlier this week, Carpenter promised fans that #Sabchella would be"the most ambitious show I've ever done,"and she did indeed turn in a splashy, glitzy, blockbuster performance.
