After 14 years, you really do become a family and working with this group will always feel like home.”

“Cast comes in, cast goes out,” Bader told TVLine in an interview published in July 2024. “It’s interesting. Because every year there are cast changes, and every year someone asks the same question about what’s going on within the One Chicago universe. But [those shows] just keep going on.”

On Saturday, April 25, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD) was held at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C.

Organized by the White House Correspondents’ Association, this year’s event marked the first time Donald Trump attended the dinner as a sitting president, having reportedly boycotted it during his first term and skipped it again in 2025.

However, the high-profile gathering was disrupted around 8:36 p.m., when a lone armed assailant allegedly attempted to breach a security checkpoint in the hotel lobby, just outside the main ballroom.

Armed with multiple weapons, includingknives and firearms, the suspect, reportedly identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old teacher and computer programmer from California, opened fire.

Secret Service agents immediately rushed to the main stage and successfully evacuated President Trump, Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and other senior officials.

Meanwhile, in videos captured during the evacuation, attendees, including senior Cabinet members and journalists, were seen taking cover under tables as several gu**hots echoed through the hall.

Shortly after news of the incident broke, Kimmel was heavily criticized online by viewers ofJimmy Kimmel Live!over a joke he made during the April 23 episode.

Kimmel called the First Lady an “expectant widow” just days prior to the attempted attack on Trump and other government officials

Hosting an “alternative” White House Correspondents’ Dinner (WHCD) on his show, Kimmel referred to Melania as an “expectant widow,” saying, “Our First Lady, Melania, is here. Look at Melania, so beautiful. Mrs. Trump, you have a glow like an expectant widow.”

He continued, “You know, Melania’s birthday is on Sunday. She’s planning to celebrate at home the same way she always does, looking out a window and whispering, ‘What have I done?’”

Given the timing of the parody and the events at the dinner, critics took to social media to slam not only Kimmel but also ABC and The Walt Disney Company, which airs the show.

One user wrote, “@ABC @Disney this is a complete and utter disgrace. I just cancelled my subscription. I encourage my followers, if you haven’t already to do the same. Disney has failed America.”

Another netizen said, “I will never watch thishorrible person.. shame on you!”

“Kimmel is mentally unstable. I am not shocked that Disney allows his mental illness to be on full display,” a third added harshly.

One comment read, “Kimmel is actually worse than the other ‘comedians.’ You can see the seething hatred on his face toward Trump and anyone that supports him…”

One netizen fumed online, “Jimmy Kimmel… should be fired! He basically made a threat! Did [he] know the sh**ter was going to be there…”

“This is completely outrageous no matter what side of the political aisle you are on,” one netizen fumed, while another added, “How evil do you have to be to say something like that… Pretty f**king evil!”

“It’s not even inherently funny. You have to bederanged to laugh at that.”

Similar sentiments were echoed by several public figures, including Larry O’Connor, a conservative media personality and editor ofTownhall, and Link Lauren, a Gen Z political commentator and TikTok influencer.

Larry described Kimmel as a “broken man” and called on ABC and The Walt Disney Company to hold him accountable for the comments.

Meanwhile, Link wrote in a social mediastatement, “Many in the mainstream media have stoked division and hatred for years. Jimmy Kimmel just made a disgusting ‘joke’ about Melania Trump becoming a widow.”

The armed suspect reportedly wrote in a note to his family, “I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done”

“After the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and what transpired with President Trump, now they suddenly want to act shocked.”

Following the attack, the suspect was taken into custody. According to investigators, Cole hadsent a noteto family members just 10 minutes before the incident.

As reported byNBC News, parts of the message read, “I don’t expect forgiveness. Again, my sincere apologies.”

Elsewhere, he allegedly wrote, “Administration officials (not including Mr. Patel): they are targets, prioritized from highest-ranking to lowest.”

Allen added, “I experience rage thinking about everything this administration has done.”

He is currently facing federal charges, and his first court appearance is scheduled for today, April 27, at the Federal District Court in Washington, D.C.

Allen has been charged with a**ault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, use of a firearm during a crime of violence, and attempted homicide of a federal officer, which are expected to be included in the formal arraignment.

Since the Correspondents’ Dinner was abruptly halted, Trump announced that a “bigger and better” version of the event will be rescheduled within 30 days.

However, a fixed date has not yet been publicly announced.

“Threating a mans wife is not a bright move… Trump should dismantle this man top to bottom. No limits,” wrote one user

Carol Burnett Recalls Being Fired from Movie Theater Job at 18. Now Her Hollywood Star Is ‘Right in Front of That Theater’ (Exclusive)

NEED TO KNOW

  • Speaking to PEOPLE, the actress recalled being fired after a dispute with customers when films ran on continuous loops and audiences came and went mid-screening

  • Years later, Burnett saw the story come full circle when her Hollywood Walk of Fame star was placed in front of that same theater in 1975

Long before she became a television icon, Carol Burnett spent a summer working inside a movie theater while she was a college student at UCLA. The job put her right inside the film world she already loved, and only a short walk from the neighborhood where she grew up.

Speaking with PEOPLE exclusively ahead of her appearance at the TCM Classic Film Festival, Burnett looks back on those days in detail, noting it was also where she began to realize just how deeply she cared about the craft of filmmaking.

“I was an usherette, as they call it, when I was 18 during the summer, a hiatus when I was at UCLA…at the Warner Brothers theater on Hollywood and Wilcox,” she recalls. “And we lived just on Wilcox and Yucca. So it was a block away.”

Working at the theater gave Burnett an up-close education in moviegoing culture at the time.

She remembers being completely captivated by films like Alfred Hitchcock’sStrangers on a Train, which happened to be screening during her shifts. Burnett was especially struck by Robert Walker’s performance and Hitchcock’s storytelling style, which she admired even as a young usher.

But the job also revealed the chaotic reality of theaters in that era, where films played continuously and audiences would come and go mid-story without much concern for where they landed in the plot.

“So people would come in, buy a ticket and come in in the middle of a movie and sit down and watch it till the end. And then when it started again, they would watch the beginning and they'd say, ‘Oh, this is where we came in,’ and they would leave,” Burnett explains. “I mean, it was insane! It never made any sense.”

That tension between her love of movies and the rules of her job eventually led to an unforgettable moment.

“I remember I was in front of the aisle two door this one night, and this couple came in and wanted to be seated the last five minutes ofStrangers on a Train. And I said, ‘Are you crazy? Please, no!...it'll ruin it for you if you see the ending before you see the whole beginning,’” Burnett remembers saying to the couple.

Despite the couple being “adamant” that she show them to their seats, Burnett argued her case, determined to preserve the audience experience. That, however, is when management intervened.

“So the manager came up — Mr. Batten, I'll never forget his name — and he said, ‘What's going on here?’ And this woman said, ‘She won't let us sit down,’” Burnett recalls. “[Mr. Batten] looked at me, literally he drew his index finger across his neck like he was chopping off my head, ripped off my epaulets and fired me on the spot.”

Looking back now, Burnett can laugh at how it all unfolded — and in a way, the story has come full circle.

Years later, when she was being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she knew exactly where she wanted it.

"The lovely ending to this story is that years later, when they said, 'Where do you want your star on Hollywood Boulevard?' It's right in front of that theater," she says.

When the building was later gutted after an earthquake, her husband, Brian Miller, even managed to rescue a piece of its history — and his wife's backstory.

"My husband went and said, 'What are you going to do with some of these doors and stuff?' And they said, 'Well, we're just going to dump them,'" she recalls.

But Miller had another idea, and ultimately brought home the door from the aisle where she was fired.

"So now we have the aisle two door that I was fired in front of. I'm looking at it right now in my office," she shares.

At the upcoming festival running April 30 through May 3 in Hollywood, Burnett says she will revisit that chapter when she introducesStrangers on a Train.

“I'm going to tell this story before they show the movie, of course,” she reveals. “It's one of Hitchcock's best.”

When asked if she ever got to share the incident with Hitchcock himself, Burnett clarified that while they never spoke directly about it, the story reached him through her press agent.

“So in my home now, I have the original poster ofStrangers on a Trainthat Alfred Hitchcock autographed to me: ‘To Carol – Alfred Hitchcock,’” she tells PEOPLE. “And he even drew — he was kind of like a cartoonist, and he drew a little cartoon of himself, and I have that on my wall.”

  • At the premiere for the movie Michael, the songwriter and producer talked about their legacy and competition

  • Jackson died in 2009 at age 50, while Prince died in 2016 at age 57

Michael JacksonandPrincemay have been in competition with each other on the charts, but ultimately, they respected each other. That is, according to Jimmy Jam, who worked with both of them.

Speaking with PEOPLE at the Hollywood premiere ofMichaelon April 20, the songwriter and producer, 66, shares that he thinks they “probably were both competitive, but they also were very respectful of each other.”

“The way they went about doing what they do is totally different. I always say Prince would start a record at the beginning of the day, and at the end of the day, the record would be totally done, mixed, ready to go. Very spontaneous. That's the way Prince did it," he shares.

On the other hand, Jimmy Jam notes that “Michael was very meticulous.”

“I remember, on ‘Scream,’ we literally spent three days changing one line, and he just said, ‘We have to challenge ourselves.’ And we finally were like, ‘Okay, we're done challenging that. It sounds great. It sounds great.’ "

Jackson died at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009. He suffered cardiac arrest at home. Meanwhile, Prince died of an accidental fentanyl overdose at Paisley Park, his home and recording studio in Chanhassen, Minn., at age 57 on April 21, 2016.

In Jimmy Jam’s mind, they were “two different individuals in the way they create,” but he insists “they both admired each other," even if they seemingly feuded during their careers, so much so that it's rumored thatPrince skipped out on the supergroup recordingof "We Are the World" in 1985 due to Jackson's involvement.

“Which doesn't mean they necessarily would have got along in the studio creating, because they did it in a different way, but Prince was definitely influenced by Michael, and I think Michael was definitely influenced by Prince,” Jimmy Jam adds.

About Prince, Jimmy Jam tells PEOPLE, “There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about him or think about what would he do in a certain situation.”

Michaelhit theaters on April 24.
