George Clooney Can’t Stand Watching His Older Films for This Reason

May 02, 2026

At the51st Chaplin Awards Galain New York on Monday night,George Clooneytook the stage to accept one of cinema’s most respected honors. Presented by Film at Lincoln Center, the prestigious award celebrates artists whose work embodies the spirit of Charles Chaplin. But when the conversation turned to his own body of work, the actor admitted that he can’t bear to watch his oldermovies, sparking curiosity among fans and peers.

George Clooney shares why watching his old movies is harder

Despite a career that includes nearly 100 films, George Clooney has revealed why his earlier films are tough to rewatch, citing the uneasy distance between who he was then and who he is today as an artist.

“It’s a weird thing,” Clooney, 64, toldPEOPLEon the red carpet at the 51st Chaplin Award gala at Alice Tully Hall in New York City on Monday, April 27. “As you get older, it’s hard to watch movies when you were younger because you’re like, ‘Holy s—, that doesn’t even look like me anymore.’ “

The “Jay Kelly” actor, however, shared that he recently watched his 2009 stop-motion film with Wes Anderson, “Fantastic Mr. Fox”, alongside his 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, whom he shares with wife Amal Clooney.

Clooney said “Fantastic Mr. Fox” is easier to watch because only his voice appears, which lets his twins start to understand his work. He usually avoids looking back, but with 65 approaching, he admits he may revisit his films later since the view forward is shorter now.

At the annual New York City gala, George Clooney accepted Film at Lincoln Center’s Chaplin Award, which recognizes significant contributions to the art of cinema. The award bears the name of Charlie Chaplin, who became the organization’s inaugural honoree in 1972.

Clooney, joined by wife Amal, 48, posed on the red carpet ahead of the gala. The evening’s tributes came from friends and collaborators, including Stephen Colbert, Julianna Margulies, John Turturro and Sam Rockwell.

ICE reports 18th detainee death in 2026, putting agency on track for new record

Deaths in ICE custody set to hit new record this year 01:40

CBS News

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday reported the 18th death of an individual in its custody so far this year, putting the agency on track to record a new all-time high in detainee deaths if the grim trend continues.

A 33-year-old man from Cuba died at an ICE detention center in Georgia on Tuesday, the agency said in a notification to Congress and a public press release. ICE said Denny Adan Gonzalez was found unresponsive in his cell at the privately operated Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia, late Tuesday. The agency described the suspected cause of death as suicide and said its investigation is ongoing.

The reported suicide is the 18th ICE detainee death in the first four months of 2026. Last year, ICE recorded 31 detainee deaths, a two-decade high that nearly surpassed the all-time record set in 2004, when 32 deaths were reported.

ICE said Gonzalez first entered the U.S. in May 2019 at an official port of entry along the Texas border, but that he was deported the following year. The agency said he reentered the country illegally in 2022 and was subsequently released by U.S. immigration officials.

In December, ICE said Gonzalez was arrested by local officials in Charlotte, North Carolina, on assault and domestic violence charges, prompting the federal agency to take him into custody in January. He had been in ICE custody ever since, ICE added.

The sharp increase in ICE detainee deaths over the past year has coincided with the Trump administration's nationwide deportation blitz. The controversial crackdown has led ICE to hold record numbers of detainees in its custody while it tries to deport them.

Earlier this year, ICE's detention population soared to more than 70,000 people. That number has decreased since the Trump administration scaled back its aggressive operations in major cities like Minneapolis amid bipartisan outcry. But the detention population still stood around 60,000 last month, higher than under any prior administration.

Even after accounting for the number of people in detention each year, 2025 had the highest death rate — 5.6 people per 10,000 detainees — since 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, according to a CBS News analysis of government data.

Those who have died in ICE custody this year include an Afghan refugee who worked alongside American military forces in Afghanistan and a Mexican teenager. The agency said the detainees had been previously arrested by local officials on an array of charges including theft, fraud and resisting an officer.

As the Trump administration has greatly expanded ICE's detention apparatus, reports of substandard conditions, including overcrowding, inadequate medical care and insufficient food, have emerged throughout the country.

ICE has consistently denied allegations of poor conditions in its detention facilities, and when it announces new detainee deaths, the agency issues similar defenses of its treatment of those in custody.

"ICE is committed to ensuring that all those in custody reside in safe, secure, and humane environments," the agency said Friday. "Comprehensive medical care is provided from the moment individuals arrive and throughout their stay."

Trump administration appeals judge's order upending Kennedy's vaccine policies

Trump administration appeals judge's order upending Kennedy's vaccine policies

By Nate Raymond

Reuters

BOSTON, April 29 (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Wednesday appealed a federal judge's ruling blocking key elements of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s push to reshape U.S. vaccine policy, including reducing the number of routinely ‌recommended childhood vaccinations.

The U.S. Department of Justice filed a notice of its plans to appeal Boston-based U.S. District Judge Brian ‌Murphy's March 16 ruling, which also found that a vaccine advisory panel whose members were handpicked by Kennedy was unlawfully constituted.

That ruling forced the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices to postpone a meeting scheduled to begin two days later, after Murphy concluded that 13 members had been selected through a "tainted" appointment process and barred them from serving.

The ruling dealt a significant setback for the reduced childhood vaccination schedule championed by Kennedy.

Administration officials indicated at the time that they planned to appeal, with now-Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche taking to social media to ‌describe Murphy's order as "lawless" and an "activist decision."

Murphy has earned the scorn of President Donald Trump and his allies for repeatedly blocking administration initiatives, including core parts of the Republican president's hard-line immigration agenda.

Any appeal would be heard by the Boston-based 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which is dominated by judges appointed by Democratic presidents. Any appellate court ruling could later be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

MEDICAL GROUPS CHALLENGE KENNEDY MOVES, JUDGE AGREES

The lawsuit was filed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and other medical groups, which said public health was at risk due to policies adopted under Kennedy, an anti-vaccine activist picked by Trump to head the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that ‌oversees various agencies including the CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health.

The plaintiffs alleged that the CDC acted unlawfully on January 5, when it cut the number of routinely recommended childhood vaccinations to 11 and downgraded the immunization recommendations for six diseases, including rotavirus, influenza and hepatitis A.

Lawyers with the U.S. Department of Justice had argued that while HHS welcomes debate about vaccine policy, Kennedy and officials under him have broad authority to change it to address what they said was a decline in public trust ‌in vaccines following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Murphy agreed with the plaintiffs, saying the CDC lacked authority to unilaterally change the immunization schedule in January without consulting the advisory committee, which makes recommendations that shape U.S. vaccine practices and insurance coverage.

The judge, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, said the committee itself had been ‌unlawfully reconstituted after Kennedy last year removed and replaced all 17 independent experts who previously served on the panel with people the plaintiffs said shared his vaccine skepticism.

Murphy said Kennedy, in picking new members, paid little to no attention to a federal law that requires such panels to be balanced, and picked "distinctly unqualified" individuals to serve on the committee that is supposed to be composed ‌of experts on vaccines and immunization.

Murphy blocked 13 of its 15 members from continuing to serve and set aside earlier votes the panel took, including to downgrade recommendations for hepatitis B vaccines for newborns and COVID-19 shots broadly.
