These equipment recall a time when there was more formality around getting dressed. "I also love all the theatre of 'dressing,' particularly these days," Tashjian provides. "I just like the drama and ritual of making an ensemble and topping it off with the correct headgear, like a wax seal on a letter." In case you're not yet bought, she has one last pitch: practicality. "When you've got a nasty hair day, you placed on a hat and it appears such as you spent 20 more minutes getting dressed," she says.
Jalil Johnson, Saks trend office coordinator and elegance star, was desirous about hats pre–Trend Week. "Does anyone nonetheless put on a hat?" he questioned in an Instagram publish, referencing a favorite Stephen Sondheim track, "Ladies Who Lunch," and sporting a structured Gigi Burris cap. The answer: a powerful sure. So for Style Week, he wore a raffia hat from Jenny Walton.
"What I really like about it's how whimsical and retro it is," he says. Pairing the cap with a workwear jacket, button-up shirt, pencil skirt, slingback heels, and a Zankov x S.Joon mohair clutch, Johnson channelled the Prada Spring 2024 collection. "Although the present didn't function hats — the models truly wore jersey headbands — I assumed the hat added an extra oomph." Indeed. For a guiding mantra, Johnson suggests asking your self WWJD — "What would Jackie do?" (As in, Kennedy Onassis.)
Laura Reilly, a trend author and founding father of publication Magasin, is understood for her well-documented Trend Week seems. This season, she kicked things off in an ivory driver-style hat from the Row's Spring 2024 collection. After seeing it within the brand's look e-book and on Greta Lee at the 2023 SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Reilly polled her Substack followers about whether or not she can purchase the hat. "Lots of them stated no lol," she says. (She obviously did not pay attention).
Thankfully, the reception was totally different IRL, thanks no less than partially to Reilly's masterful styling: Pairing the cream-coloured hat with a belted, outsized gray coat, structured straw bag, and black Mary Jane flats proved a profitable mixture. Even if it wasn't all the time the plan. "I had put [the look] collectively when planning out rough drafts of my outfits for the week — this was nicely earlier than I even knew when the hat can be on the market," she says. "Once I finally had the hat in hand, I wasn't positive I'd add it until I tried it on the morning of. I don't assume I might have pulled together a more hat-worthy look in the long run, though."
In the event you can't wait till Altuzarra's assortment hits stores within the fall, Reilly suggests scouring the secondhand market, particularly when you're prepared to cope with some trial and error. "I've been doing numerous eBaying/Etsying felted hats these days, and the problem I've come up towards is which you can't tell how exactly they're going to take a seat in your crown," she sats. "One of the best luck I've had is with hats with a barely deeper dome, so that approach, at the very least your head isn't hitting the top of the hat whereas the brim flares awkwardly away, not fairly sitting flat."
