TARGET shoppers have had it with the new limited hours for self-checkout registers at stores, which force them to wait in line for a cashier.

In February, Target employees confirmed that some stores would reduce the hours self-checkout registers are open.

Stores can choose if they keep the kiosks closed in the early morning and late evenings.

The move was meant to combat "missing inventory," but it has also caused contempt among shoppers.

"Target closing their self-checkout has made going to Target quite unbearable. It pisses me off actually," wrote one customer on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Another wrote: "My local Target closed the self-checkout lines so it was back to waiting an eternity to get checked out."

"I understand not wanting to have folks steal at self-checkout. But don't punish your customers… have extra registers open! I was about to leave."

Several shoppers have also witnessed only one or two traditional checkouts open while the self-checkout registers are closed.

"Seriously, one checkout open. No self-checkout is open. Line looking like Christmas season. Do better," wrote one customer.

A shopper even called the move the "dumbest thing ever."

"The whole thing where @Target has the self-checkout lines closed until a certain time in the morning is the dumbest thing ever," Doctor Utopia said on X.

"I literally just walked out. I'm not waiting in a line for 20 minutes just to get a few items.

"With my anxiety, too, I don't want to talk to a cashier."

Some customers have even said they would start shopping elsewhere.

"Target Closing self-checkout? Target in Grass Valley had the self-checkout closed and only 2 registers open," one shopper said.

"Cashier told me self-checkout is closed until 11 am each day now."

"I guess I'll shop more Amazon."

EMPLOYEE PERSPECTIVE

Target employees spoke with Business Insider about the new policy when it first went into effect.

"If and when we do have to close the self-checkouts in the morning and in the evening, we're going to have a lot of people extremely upset with us," a Michigan staff member told the outlet.

"I'm going to have to explain to them that they are closed down due to theft."

On Reddit, another employee claimed self-checkout would only be open between 10 am and 6:30 pm.

Previously, the registers were available from 8 am to 10 pm.

"I get that the SCO utilization is really high but I'm not sure how this is going to go over with guests," they wrote.

A Target customer said shopping at the store felt like "a continuous disaster" after these changes.

Another new policy at the store set an age limit for who can shop alone.
