The victim – in his 40s – is currently being treated at St James's Hospital.

It's understood he had been staying in a tent in the area over the last week.

The pair, who are understood to be a couple. were arrested by investigators from Pearse Street Garda station earlier this evening.

They are being held on suspicion of assault causing harm.

Although he lost an eye in the frenzied attack, he also suffered a number of slash wounds around his body.

The injured man is originally from the Ballyfermot area but had been staying in the city centre due to his addiction to drugs.

One source said: "The arrested man has a history of violence and has convictions for sex offences.

"They are being questioned about a brutal assault on an innocent man."

Separately, cops on both sides of the border are hunting a notorious criminal who's the chief suspect in a series of violent attacks.

In the first incident, Gardai want to question the border bandit in relation to an arson attack in Co Louth a few weeks ago.

On that occasion, he's believed to have used a car to set fire to a building.

In another incident, he's believed to have threatened an ex-partner from the Newry area.

Following the incidents, the prolific criminal who has been linked to gun attacks in the past has gone into hiding.

If spotted on either side of the border he will immediately be arrested.

He has been classified as dangerous with the suspicion that he has "access to weapons".

One source said: "This individual is reckless and goes on one man crime sprees at different times. He has used violence in the past.

"Both the Gardai and the PSNI want to question him about serious incidents.

"There has been no sign of him in recent weeks but officers are anxious to locate him."
