'Extremely volatile' man armed with hatchet smashes two garda vehicles during five-hour rampage after he 'lost the plot' | Y0ZH301 | 2024-05-04 00:08:01
A MAN smashed up two garda vehicles while officers sat inside as he "lost the plot" while armed with a hatchet.
The suspect, who is well-known to cops, went on a five-hour rampage at a house in Sligo from the early hours of this morning.
The Irish Sun can reveal how the man caused a major alert in the northwest with fears for the safety of a person known to him inside the house.
While cops tried to apprehend the man, he attacked a garda car by smashing up the windows of a garda jeep and damaged a van.
He also damaged windows to the property in Sligo while he also pulled slates off the roof of a porch.
The Armed Support Unit were drafted in and used various tactics, including distraction devices and pepper spray but to no avail.
Shocked onlookers in the neighbouring houses came out and witnessed different parts of the incident.
The garda press office also issued a "media blackout" on Wednesday morning, requesting for the incident not to be reported on until it was resolved.
The incident was eventually brought to a close with the arrest of the man, aged in his early 30s, inside the home.
We have learned that the suspect is well-known to gardai and previously was convicted over threats to kill a serving officer in the south of the country.
He has also been convicted of other criminal offences in the past.
One senior source says he is an "extremely volatile" character and has a "propensity for violence".
In a statement from Garda headquarters today, a spokeswoman said: "Arising from this incident, a man aged in his 30s, has been arrested for criminal damage offences and is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at a Garda Station in Co. Sligo.
"No injuries have been reported at this time.
"Gardaí would like to thank the media for their cooperation during the Media Blackout."
