Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 has a class-based PvP mode reveals artbook | 61S07QA | 2024-05-06 21:08:01
Space Marine 2 already has campaign co-op but it turns out there's also a secret competitive multiplayer mode, according to the artbook.
Many video game leaks don't rely on random rumourmongers but are instead accidental reveals by the publisher or some other official body. Age rating listings often reveal new games, and the fact that they're imminent, long before they're announced, while developers are forever putting detailed descriptions of their games in job ads, when they're otherwise supposed to be kept secret.
Sometimes there are merchandise leaks, while artbooks are also a proven source of advance information, if someone manages to get a hold of one before the game is out. Which is exactly what's happened with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2.
The game's not out until September but, like all merch, the artbook has to be manufactured well in advance and it's now revealed that the game has a previously unmentioned competitive game mode, as well as its single-player and co-op story campaign.
Space Marine 2 is definitely an unexpected sequel, as the original was way back in 2011 and wasn't a particularly big hit. The sequel is also by a completely different publisher and developer, with the now independent Saber Interactive behind this one, instead of Homeworld's Relic Entertainment.
It's looked pretty good so far – basically Warhammer 40,000 does Gears Of War – but apparently the multiplayer mode is quite substantial and while it's only between fellow Space Marines there are multiple classes and a substantial amount of customisation.
How seriously the competitive multiplayer will be pushed remains to be seen but there's support for clans and unlockable banners, so it seems like quite a bit of work has been put into it.

Although we don't think anyone would consider multiplayer details a spoiler (except maybe the publisher) we'd still caution against watching the video below, as it goes through the entire artbook, which features details of enemies, levels, and items from the story campaign that haven't been announced yet.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 launches on September 9 for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. It's a direct sequel to the original, but alas features Clive Standen (Bryan Mills from the Taken TV show) instead of Mark Strong as Lieutenant Titus.
