In the most poignant D-Day tributes ever staged, there's a sense of a final farewell: ROBERT HARDMAN joins 100 'lucky ones' and Princess Anne in Normandy to hear tales of lost loves and heroism that reshaped the War

Surrounded by the illuminated graves of 4,140 men who would never see the liberation for which they gave their lives, the Princess Royal last night recited the words of a heartbroken mother inscribed on one headstone: 'He is not dead whose memory lives in hearts that know and loved him.' The Princess was leading the advance party for today's Royal mini-invasion of Normandy, when the King, Queen and Prince of Wales will also be here for the big set-piece events to mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
