President Donald Trump said in remarks at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that he was seeking "immediate negotiations" to acquire Denmark's territory Greenland and that he did not intend to use military force to gain control of the Arctic island. "We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force, where we would be frankly unstoppable, but I won't do that," Trump said. He added: "I have tremendous respect for both the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark." Trump told European leaders the United States needs Greenland for national security because it is the only country that could defend it from enemies such as Russia and China.

ICE releasing some detainees
Despite vowing "zero releases," the Trump administration has begunquietly releasing dozens of immigrant familiesfrom a Texas detention center after detaining but not deporting them. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released about 160 detained people – half of them minors – to a border shelter beginning Jan. 17, with plans to release as many as 100 to 150 a day over the next two to three weeks, according to the shelter director and other sources with direct knowledge of the releases.

A post shared Jan. 19 on Instagramby his foundationandhis own @realmrvalentino accountreads, "Our founder, Valentino Garavani, passed away today at his Roman residence, surrounded by his loved ones." The founder of the eponymous brand Valentino retired in 2008 after a storied career in fashion that included dressing names such as Jackie Kennedy, Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor and Joan Collins. He also introduced a signature shade of crimson known as "Valentino Red."
