On the evening of November 21, 1974, the Irish Republican Army (IRA) escalated the Troubles to previously unfathomable heights, bombing two Birmingham city centre pubs in an act of terror which sent shockwaves reverberating across Britain. Shortly after 8pm on a busy Thursday evening, the first bomb went off at The Mulberry Bush, with another blast rocking The Tavern bar just minutes later. Killing 21 civilians and injuring a further 220, it was one of the most destructive moments during the IRA's bombing campaign of mainland Britain, and remains to this day the largest unsolved mass murder in the state's history.
